Fight For Family

Okay, I'll admit, I have a fondness for romances, especially ones where the couple fights for their marriage/family, which was why I was first drawn to Back To Claim His Italian Heir. by Kate Hewitt.  From the story summary on the back, it looked like it was gonna be a fun read and it was, though honestly, I wasn't all that enamored with the story as a whole.

Characters: Emma and Nico Santini.

Premise: A couple learn to love and trust one another after an involuntary 3-month separation.

Look, I did not expect the start of this story to be Nico interrupting Emma's marriage to another man.  In her defense, she thought Nico was dead because he had been in a plane crash and had been told that he was killed.  Turns out she's fourteen weeks pregnant.  I get it, she had a horrible childhood and wanted safety and security for the kiddo while Nico is furious that she's getting married.  Look, if I thought my spouse was trying to become a bigamist, I'd be miffed too.

Truthfully, this book was a lot talkier (not a word I know, I'm making one up) than I was used to, but honestly, it was needed.  Emma and Nico had a lot to hash out given their history.  Turns out, Nico had been in a coma, then he had amnesia and had to wait for his memory to come back, and his brother Antonio had told him that Emma had taken 10 grand and left.  Little did he know, Antonio had basically paid Emma to "go away", claiming that Nico had been growing tired of her, and because she had grown up in the foster system where no one had wanted her, she believed him.

Let me be clear: these two had issues and they worked through them.  That's not something you see a lot and it was refreshing to see it played out here.  That being said, given the issues Emma was said to have: underweight, anemic, and high blood pressure, I was disappointed that they didn't have the characters consulting a doctor when Nico said that he was going to whisk her away on a plane so that they could get to know each other better.

While the story was engaging and I enjoyed it, it didn't really wow me enough to want to keep it and I'd give it about a 4, though maybe it will appeal more to somebody else.  After all, as I always say, there's a book for every person but not every book will appeal to every person.
